The completion of St Mary's Cathedral is indeed a major undertaking; at a budgeted cost of $25 million to complete the Cathedral, ensuring the Archdiocese could fund the project was quite naturally, a priority.
The real planning commenced almost three and a half years prior to the official appeal launch which was held on 15 March 2007, when His Grace invited Rev Monsignor Michael Keating to accept the challenge and the position as Chairman of the St Mary's Cathedral Fundraising Appeal.
From that point on, Monsignor Keating set about working to formulate a professional fundraising plan, and engage people as passionate as he was for the project to help raise the necessary funds.

His Grace and Monsignor Keating felt strongly that the appeal should not just be about raising money, but also help to build awareness and understanding of "what a Cathedral is and why it is so important". One of the fundamental goals established for this appeal was that it should seek "to build a sense of community and ownership within the Catholic community and the general community", something which remains a guiding principle today.

In late 2005, after a full year of planning and consultation, Monsignor Keating established his St MARY'S CATHEDRAL FUNDRAISING APPEAL COMMITTEE.
Each member of this committee would be assigned a specific part of the overall fundraising campaign, formulated to ensure every Religious Order, Association, parish and parishioner within the Perth Archdiocese was invited to participate in this historic event.
In addition, Corporate & Community Leaders and members of the wider community would be encouraged to support a project of benefit to ALL Western Australians.
